WEBB CITY, Mo. (AP) – A former teacher and coach at Webb City Junior High School has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge in a sexual assault case.
Nicholas A. Popejoy, 29, of Arma, Kansas, pleaded guilty on Monday to third-degree child molestation. A student sexual contact account has been rejected.
Popejoy was originally charged with statutory first degree sodomy. He will be sentenced on March 1.
Popejoy was a science and math teacher, first-grade basketball coach and track coach at Webb City Junior High School before being fired in November 2019, the Joplin Globe reported.
Court records indicate that Popejoy inappropriately touched a student under the age of 14 on school grounds.
The case was reported to school administrators the same day and the police were contacted.
