In the recent past, the desire of Western countries to engage with African countries has increased. More and more, bilateral forums, conferences, meetings and seminars are organized in various parts of the continent, resulting in announcements of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and financial commitments.
Notable satellite launches and collaboration on commercial agreements in the space sector
Due to the nascent nature of the African space industry, space activities have been primarily driven by the capacities of space programs funded from national budgets under the guidance of government agencies. The majority of space programs fall under the ministries of science, technology or education – or the equivalent – which determines the nature of the bilateral and multilateral engagement undertaken by the respective countries. National space agencies are part of larger networks of international aerospace and astronomical companies and other space-oriented organizations on the continent.
