The root causes of underexposure to health equity at the specialty level are numerous: lack of diversity in medical spaces, systemic and structural racism in medical education, implicit bias and suppression culture, and the undervaluation of equity-based programs.
Despite the momentum, there is growing concern that PEs are in fact lacking opportunities to formally learn the fundamental concepts of health equity and social justice. At this point, most PEs are enrolled in college, graduate school, medical school, and residency and have worked in community or academic medicine without any formal exposure or training to these principles.
