DEAR DR. ROACH: Could you tell us more information about H. pylori infection? I was diagnosed with this recently, via biopsies taken during an endoscopic procedure. I was given instructions on what antibiotics to take, which I followed. Speaking to my doctor’s medical assistant, I asked what could have caused the infection, to try to prevent it from happening again. I received a very superficial response, including that it could have come from eating in “Mom and Pop” restaurants. From research I did after this, it appears that it may be present for a long period of time without being noticed, and often the cause is uncertain.
