The annual Tivoli Fest took place in Elk Horn, Iowa, with plenty of Danish-themed activities such as folk dancing, music, and carnival food. The Museum of Danish America and Bedstormer’s House were open to visitors for free, and Skjaldborg, a Viking re-enactment group, provided a look into ancient life. The parade was a big draw, with alumni and classic cars on display, and the day ended with a fireworks display paid for by local businesses. The festival also honored Jan Jensen, an Elk Horn-Kimballton graduate and assistant coach for the Iowa Hawkeye Women’s basketball team, as parade Grand Marshal.

Over the weekend, Elk Horn, Iowa celebrated its annual Tivoli Fest, a festival that celebrates the town’s Danish heritage. The festival is a big draw for the little town, with visitors coming from all over to experience a day of Danish culture and traditions. The festival featured a parade, folk dancing, music, and carnival food, including the famous aebleskiver and medisterpolse, served at the Elk Horn Fire Station.

The festival was a sea of red, white, and blue, with Danish and American flags flying high on light poles around the town. The Danish Walking Street was a popular spot for visitors to grab some food and souvenirs, with vendors gathered just about a block from the Danish Windmill. Visitors could also explore the Museum of Danish America and Bedstormer’s House, both of which were open to the public for free.

For those interested in history, Skjaldborg, a Viking re-enactment group just south of the Danish Windmill, gave visitors a glimpse into what life was like during that time period. The parade was also a highlight of the festival, with tractors, classic cars, and groups walking and riding, including alumni from a couple of “Class of” floats.

The parade’s Grand Marshal was Jan Jensen, an Elk Horn-Kimballton graduate in 1987. Festival officials said, “Even though we all know her for her abilities in Basketball (In case you missed it, she is the assistant coach for the Iowa Hawkeye Women’s basketball team) she was also involved in many other activities during school! She was in band, choir, jazz band, swing choir, speech, and many other activities!” They also thanked her for taking the time to chat with the school band.

The day wrapped up with a spectacular fireworks display paid for through donations from local businesses, Quoting Tivoli Fest Elk Horn Iowa on Facebook. The festival’s Facebook page has videos of the day’s events, from folk dancing to the fireworks.
