Western NY clothing line joins rise of gender-fluid fashion
Michael and Josean Vargas-Rodriguez, the founders of Luci and Dona Boutique, have joined the growing movement of gender-fluid fashion. With over a decade of experience in the fashion industry, they started their journey by making accessories from their apartment. Inspired by their drag names, Luci and Dona now offers gender-fluid clothing for the queer community. The duo opened a new storefront location to be more visible and create a space where they can express themselves freely. However, there are still challenges to overcome, such as the limitations in pattern-making software that only recognize male or female measurements.
Challenges in Gender-Fluid Fashion
One of the challenges faced by Luci and Dona is the lack of inclusive pattern-making software. Josean Vargas-Rodriguez highlights that current programs require specifying a male or female body, restricting the freedom to create patterns that fit individuals regardless of their gender identity. They believe that a body is a body, and a pattern should be able to accommodate various body types without gender limitations.
Embracing Individuality and Expression
Luci and Dona aim to show that fashion doesn’t have to be tied to gender. They celebrate the freedom to express themselves through clothing, whether it’s a masculine or feminine style. Michael Vargas-Rodriguez emphasizes that gender fluidity allows them to embrace both the masculine and feminine aspects within their own bodies without erasing one or the other. For them, fashion is a form of self-expression and a way to tell their story.
As gender-fluid fashion continues to rise, Luci and Dona’s journey serves as an inspiration and a reminder that fashion should be inclusive and empowering for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity.
