JACKSON • Lawyers representing the US Department of Justice and the state of Mississippi announced Monday afternoon that they were close to agreeing on a solution to improve services for the beleaguered Mississippi mental health system.
At a status conference before U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves, attorneys for the Department of Justice and the state said they had come to an agreement on most substantive issues.
A major sticking point, however, is who should monitor the state’s progress to ensure that it complies with any plan that lawyers make.
“We practically pointed our i’s and crossed our t’s on the substantive elements of the court’s reparations order,” said Deena Fox, senior counsel for the Department of Justice.
Some of these points of agreement include what services should be offered in different parts of the state and how those services should be delivered.
