Regarding “A Deadly Model of Failed Leadership” (A12, March 5): After summer flare-ups after Texas reopened with no public health measures fully in place and winter recess, COVID-19 cases have eventually started to decline. However, as many people rallied together in the recent winter storm and coronavirus vaccination and testing has slowed, Texas is on the verge of another wave.
Since Houston is the first city to find the new five, more contagious variants of the coronavirus, now is not the time to remove the state’s mask mandate. As a family doctor, I am concerned that this action is confusing Texans who do not follow news of the coronavirus pandemic and might mistakenly believe the masks are no longer needed.
