For a few years in the 1980s, the highlight of my summer was when my neighbor was leaving for her two week vacation. It was a very exciting time for our family because during her absence, she lent us her VHS player.
Long before “excessive viewing” or the idea of limiting children’s screen time, my mom and I would draw the curtains against the sun and spend two weeks watching videos we rented from Xtravision. ET, Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, Romancing The Stone, Splash, Gremlins, The Karate Kid – we’ve all watched them, time and time again.
But it was the 1986 Space Camp movie, about a gang of teenagers who, while attending summer camp at Kennedy Space Center, were accidentally sent into space, that kicked off my love for everything. regards space and NASA.
Like many children, I became fascinated by the ingenuity and bravery required to leave our planet, and I had a secret ambition to become an astronaut.
