Free PlayStation Plus PS5 and PS4 Games For January 2021

January is drawing to a close, which means you don’t have much time to grab this month’s PS Plus giveaway bundle. The range of free PS Plus games for January includes Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Greedfall on PS4 as well as the PS5 version of the Maneater Shark Simulator.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the final installment in the rebooted Tomb Raider series, bringing Lara Croft’s on-going adventure to the jungles of South America to save the world from a Mayan apocalypse. In GameSpot’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider review, reviewer Edmond Tran praised the thrill of exploration and the challenge of solving ancient tomb puzzles, but game’s traditional mechanics can make the journey frustrating.

Greedfall is a 2019 RPG that tasks players with exploring a mysterious island called Teer Fradee, which is full of magical secrets to explore and monsters to hunt. the game caters to traditional RPG fans with character builds featuring different abilities, spells, skills and objectives that can be completed in multiple ways. In GameSpot’s Greedfall review, reviewer Khee Hoon Chan favorably compared its compelling exploration and combat mechanics to Witcher 3, but criticized its addiction to colonialist themes.

Maneater is this month’s PS5 exclusive game- although it is also available on PS4, only players on PS5 will be able to use it for free. Maneater is described as a ShaRkPG, an RPG in which you play as a man-eating shark. Starting off as a small puppy, the player is tasked with first surviving and then thriving as one of the ocean’s top predators. Much like RPGs with human characters, you’ll be able to tailor your shark’s skills to your playstyle as they grow in size and strength.

As with previous PlayStation Plus giveaways, throughout January games are PS4 titles that are also playable on the PS5. Newly launched next-gen console can play most PS4s games, with improvements that vary between games including reduced load times, more stable frame rates, and increased resolutions. Only a small handful of PS4 games are not supported on PS5, and the list has already started to shrink.

The developer of Greedfall announced that the game will get an update and additional content for the PS5 and Xbox Series X / S, although it’s not yet clear whether this will be a free update for all next-gen gamers.
