From the Broad Institute at the White House: Eric Lander makes science exciting | The edge

Shortly after taking the oath, President Joe Biden announced key players on his scientific team, including none other than Eric Lander, founder of the Broad Institute and somewhat of a Cambridge-Boston legend among scholars, to lead in as long as White House Presidential Scientific Advisor. Boston University synthetic biologist James Galagan is among local researchers excited to see Lander, who served on the BU’s board from 2008 to 2013, take the helm.

“I am very excited to see scientific facts and rational thinking find their way into our political leadership,” says Galagan, Biomedical Engineer, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Microbiology at the BU College of Engineering. Galagan first met Lander decades ago, seeing him enter and leave meetings at the Whitehead Institute / MIT Genome Research Center– since then it has been renamed the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard – with some of the brightest minds in science, deliberating and reflecting data related to the daunting task researchers were trying to solve at the time: sequencing the human genome for the first time.
