From the island, you take your clan to one of the ten level gates, and enter a brave volunteer for a top-down hack and slash adventure.

The core gameplay itself isn’t particularly fun. Your attack is limited to Normal Attack, Strong Attack, Air Variants, and Throwing Items. In addition, the game also encourages the parade via a timed dodged. It is a very simple and mundane control scheme, but the main problems lie in its execution.

The animations, although pleasing to the eye, are very awkward and the game sometimes feels insensitive. For example, ground attacks can be very effective, but getting the entries to register is a nightmare in the middle of melee combat. For a game which encourages aggressiveness, we can only consider as a big flaw that the fight is not very fluid.

Where Gods Will Fall really shines is in its boss fights. Each of the 10 gods attacks your warrior with a unique attack. Each boss has their own learning curve and a unique sense of satisfaction after being defeated.

While the boss fights are the most fun part of the gameplay, unfortunately they are only a fraction of the whole experience. Due to the random nature of the game, you will get stuck trying perpetually for a level, never reaching the boss. Additionally, this tedious process can end up repeating itself after each of the many permadeaths.

In each game, the difficulty of each level and the enemies within are assigned randomly. Therefore, you have no idea what you are getting yourself into when entering the kingdom of God. Each failed attempt will deprive you of one of your warriors permanently, as will the level recoil. As a result, the probability of finding the easiest realm to enter early is quite low, and your undeveloped warriors will not have a great chance of survival.

A unique image for each part

While the random elements of Gods Will Fall can be frustrating, when you manage to have a good run it can be a lot of fun. Your warriors are given randomly assigned names, classes, skills, but best of all, stories. If you manage to progress beyond a level, you will see personal stories and relationships emerge between the clan.

Each game is unique in that sense, and as a result, you feel very invested in the survival of your team. It’s all the more frightening as they’ll likely all be murdered at the first hurdle.

Again, it’s just a shame that you find yourself stuck in the same parts and unable to discover the full map most of the time.

The design of the characters and their animations work well in the environment, although there is a slight clash of styles. Bosses shine again, as their models are suitably distinctive and interesting. Plus, the combination of tribal and orchestral music complements each scene and creates the right atmosphere for your Celtic berserkers to go wild.

Overall, Gods Will Fall is a game to place. Normally, structure is a key part of how we enjoy games. You’d expect a single-player campaign to advance in difficulty, complexity, or even just storytelling, in order to keep it interesting. Gods Will Fall, with all its random elements, directly breaks the idea of ​​structure. Moreover, it comes across as an artificial attempt to be different, rather than a true creative choice.

Gods Will Fall has its issues, but it’s not without magic. The automatically generated characters and their stories add real charm. Plus, boss fights are a fun challenge and the aesthetic is nice.
