Google LLC annual Google for Games Developer Summit is taking place in the virtual domain this week, and the company is using the event to announce important new features and tools for Android games developers.
In one blog post today, Greg Hartrell, head of product management for games on Android and Google Play, said Android is the world’s most popular mobile gaming platform, with users around the world spending a total of 1.4 trillion minutes playing games each month.
“It is important for us that our platforms are very useful for all types of game developer, our payment system helps games monetize in over 65 countries, ”Hartrell said. “Additionally, we provide our users with over 275 local payment methods, including over 180 carrier billing options, with gift cards sold at over 900,000 unique outlets around the world.”
The updates include new tools and features that should help developers extend the reach of their games and get more information about their performance.
One of the most important updates is a new feature called Google Play item delivery, which allows developers to dynamically provide their games, allowing players to jump into action faster, even while resources are loading. New Android performance tuner, meanwhile, aims to help developers optimize things like frame rate and fidelity across multiple Android devices, while also providing more performance information in Android Vitals.
A second group of updates are more focused on reality game development, including the new Android GPU Inspector. Developers can take an in-depth look at the specific graphics processing units used on Android devices and see more details on how their games rendering steps and GPU counters. This gives graphics engineers more information and ideas to work with when optimizing their games for better frame rates and better battery life, Google said.
Other updates on the developer front include a new Android Game Developer extension for Visual Studio that facilitates Android support with cross-platform games, and a new Game Package Registry for Unity which consolidates various Google application programming interfaces into one package, including Google Play Billing, Android App Bundles, Play Asset Distribution, Play Instant, and Firebase for Games.
Another area of interest for Google is providing gamers with more visual clues in the Google Play Store to help them quickly understand what type of game they watch.
“The Google Play Store is becoming more gameplay-centric by showing more visuals that illustrate gameplay and a new tag system to help users learn more about game traits and helps with exploration, ”said Hartrell.
Meanwhile, Google Firebase The mobile and web application development framework has acquired more features that should help developers save time on more laborious tasks such as infrastructure work, the company said.
The biggest update to Firebase is the introduction of the new Cloud Firestore Scalable NoSQL database, available in alpha test mode starting this week. With Cloud Firestore, developers have access to multi-regional reliability up to “five nines” of uptime, as well as atomic transactions and more robust offline support.
“Cloud Firestore can be used in many different situations,” Google wrote in a second blog post. “You can use it to simply register your users game state to the cloud. Or save a share game state to be seen by several different clients in a multiplayer mode game. Use it to post daily challenges or user-generated content that can be easily queried and viewed by millions of customers. Or build …
