New York Republican Party committee chairman Nick Langworthy and some state-wide GOP lawmakers want to create a recall mechanism for elected positions statewide.
The announcement stems from frustrations over emergency powers granted to Governor Andrew Cuomo during the COVID-19 pandemic.
They say the principle is similar to what is happening in California, where voters can request a recall vote. Langworthy said a recall would create more accountability in state offices.
“It shouldn’t be a partisan issue. This is something that every Democrat, Republican, Conservative, Liberal, whatever your stripe, you should support because he holds the people in power accountable, ”Langworthy said.
A recall mechanism would require an amendment to the state constitution.
