*Update: Ok, with some fidgeting, we’ve been able to figure out how to turn Facebook Dark Mode back on In the iPhone app. Facebook has confirmed that Android users should have their issues resolved now too. Here’s the iOS fix:
Next, go into your iPhone’s settings and scroll down to the app section. There, select Facebook. In the Facebook app setting, turn on “Upload HD video” and “Upload HD photos.” Weird as it is, that has gotten us Facebook Dark Mode back on at least three different iPhones.
If Dark Mode isn’t accessible, force quit the app by sliding you finger up slightly from the bottom of the home screen, then swipe up on the Facebook app.

We tried to bring Facebook Dark Mode back by clearing the app cache and storage on some Android devices but that didn’t seem to work, unfortunately, but it appears those issues may be now lifting.
Did anybody else on Android have Dark Mode just disappear on Facebook? I just opened my Facebook app and got blinded by the white layout, went into settings and Dark Mode seems to have disappeared in the Facebook App settings.. #Facebook #darkmode #AndroidMay 26, 2021
Facebook Dark Mode has disappeared without warning from iOS and Android as users online complain that the unbearable lightness of Facebook normal mode is more than they can bear.
According to some users, after an update several accessibility options seemed to be missing, including Dark Mode. We were running version 3220.127.116.11.119 (292363515) on iOS, which according to the Apple App store, was last updated six days ago, and we had no issue with our Dark Mode.
We can confirm though that the problem seems to be plaguing version 318.104.22.168.122 (293873823) as well as the older 319 version of the app. We downloaded the new iOS version on several iPhones and were able to replicate the issue.
What’s odd is that this isn’t the first time this has happened – Android users at the start of May reported a similar situation that rectified itself without confirmation or warning from Facebook. However, it’s clear that the more recent outage on May 26 was far more widespread – our article on how to enable Facebook Dark mode suddenly shot up in traffic, which clearly showed an issue had occurred suddenly and without warning. Some users are now reporting that Facebook dark mode is re-appearing as suddenly as it disappeared on 26 May, which suggests that this is a server side tweak that the above fix is able to trigger more quickly – we certainly weren’t able to remove dark mode by following the same steps again.
Facebook has confirmed to our sister site Tom’s Guide that it has solved the issue on the Android app, which means Android users should be able to re-activate dark mode in the very near future if they haven’t already: “We have restored service for those who experienced a technical issue that caused some people to have trouble accessing certain features on Facebook’s Android app,” the spokesperson told Tom’s Guide.
What happened to Facebook Dark Mode setting?
The question of what actually happened is curious – firstly, Facebook seems to be ignoring the fact iPhone users are encountering this problem at all, simply focusing on the (currently unfixable) Android Facebook dark mode issue. A Facebook company spokesperson has acknowledged the issue in a statement to TechRadar: “We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing certain features on Facebook’s Android app. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.” That doesn’t say anything about the iOS app, but fortunately there at least appears to be a way to get it back on iPhones and iPads.
Our guess is that by toggling the settings in iOS, you’re forcing the app to reset its cache and the mode is re-enabled for some reason – and it doesn’t explain why the same manual app cache clearout on Android doesn’t work in the same way. This is clearly a bug as it’s highly unlikely Facebook would be interested in removing dark mode, but it’s one that clearly affects and upsets thousands of users.
How to enable Facebook dark mode
If you’re fresh to these issues and want to see if you can add dark mode, it’s a simple process (if the option is there for you). To enable dark mode on the mobile app, tap the menu icon at the top right of the app (for Android) or the three lines in the bottom right-hand corner (for iPhone) and select ‘Settings and Privacy’ (represented by a cog icon).
