Hawaii Lawmakers Consider Standardized Travel Rules For Pandemic Government And Politics

Kauai has had very little virus spread throughout the pandemic with just 232 total cases since March 2020.

More more than half of them were directly related to travel, and the island saw a big increase when it first participated in the state’s unique pre-flight test program in October.

Since the quarantine and secondary testing program began at the resort town of Kauai on Jan.5, the island has only registered 35 positive cases – and 30 of them were travel-related, according to the State Department of Health.

But while Kauai has had the fewest number of virus cases of any county in the state, it also has many jobless tourism workers and businesses on the verge of shutting down.

“Public health is our top priority,” said Hawaii House of Commons Speaker Scott Saiki, who is the lead author of the bill. “But… Kauai currently has the highest unemployment rate of any county in the state.”
