“We send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of this young man. This is the first known COVID-related death in a K-12 age student in our county. This heart-breaking news should be a reminder to us all how serious this virus can be and how anyone can be impacted. As we continue to see our county cases increasing, we need anyone who has not been vaccinated do so now,” St. Clair County Medical Health Officer Annette Mercatante said in a written statement. The health department shares recommendations and guidance with all school leaders in St. Clair County on a regular, weekly basis, Michaluk said.
St. Clair County has reported 19,764 COVID-19 cases, 440 deaths and 19,121 recovered cases since the start of the pandemic. As of Tuesday, there were 203 active cases in the county.
