The Alpena Senior Citizens Center is hosting a Senior Health and Fitness Fair on National Senior Health and Fitness Day. The free event is open to any interested seniors and will feature vendor booths from local specialists and educators, as well as presentations on various health and fitness topics. Regular exercise, like the senior exercise class offered at the center, can improve balance, physical and mental health, and provide a social opportunity. Seniors in Alpena, Michigan will have the opportunity to learn about health and fitness tips at the Alpena Senior Citizens Center on Wednesday, May 25th. The senior center is partnering with MyMichigan Health’s Community Education Department and other local specialists and educators to present a Senior Health and Fitness Fair from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, which is National Senior Health and Fitness Day.
The Senior Health and Fitness Fair is a free event open to any interested seniors. The fair will feature vendor booths presented by Alcona Health Center, Alpena Fire Department, Catholic Human Services, Healogics, Kindred, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Michigan State University Extension, MyMichigan Health, Northeast Michigan Community Service Agency, Thunder Bay Fyzical Therapy, Thunder Bay Transportation, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
In addition to vendor booths, presentations will be given on a variety of topics related to senior health and fitness. These topics include Nutrition, Preventing Heat-Related Illness, Spiritual Care and Loneliness, Osteoporosis and Diet, Osteoporosis and Treatment Options, Inpatient Rehabilitation Services, Fall Risk Prevention, Senior Programs, and an Overview of Physical Therapy.
BJ Sander, Alpena Senior Citizens Center program manager, said that she has always wanted to host a Senior Health and Fitness Fair in the past, and this year, they are finally doing it. Sander also leads senior exercise classes at the center on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, and many seniors have seen great results from participating in this class. Regular exercise can improve balance, Finally physical health, mental health, and also provide a social opportunity.
The Senior Health and Fitness Fair is a way for the senior center to give back to seniors who are committed to their health.
