PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) – The UK’s new variant of COVID-19 is now in Oregon. Dr Tim Menza of the Oregon Health Authority explained that the strain is not more deadly and does not cause more serious illness, but that it spreads more easily.
“There is a little change in the surface protein called spike protein and it seems to bind a little more tightly to the respiratory cells where it establishes the infection and so that’s what we currently think is the big difference,” Menza said.
The person who tested positive for the variant lives in Multnomah County. According to the health department, the person has not traveled recently, which worries Multnomah County health officer Dr Jennifer Vines about the potential for the community to spread.
