State health officials have confirmed that a more contagious variant of the virus that causes COVID-19 has been detected in Wisconsin.
The variant, known as B117, was discovered on Tuesday, the State Department of Health Services said in a statement.
“We already know that COVID-19 is easily transmitted by respiratory droplets, and with this new variant which appears to be even more contagious, it is even more important to take preventative measures like wearing a mask and keeping away physical, ”said Andrea Palm, secretary-designate of DHS. .
State epidemiologist Ryan Westergaard said the variant was detected by systematic genome sequencing of a positive COVID-19 test for a resident of Eau Claire County.
Westergaard said he had no information on anyone other than who had traveled overseas in the two weeks leading up to the test.
