Ever since Sony’s acquisition of Insomniac, plans for Sunset Overdrive 2 have taken a backseat to other projects like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. However, a recent turn of events has suggested that Sony and Insomniac could eventually bring the series to the PS4 and PS5.

Former Senior Designer for Microsoft’s Perfect Dark, Drew Murray, parted ways with the Xbox development team to rejoin Insomniac Games on February 2021. Murray co-founded the Microsoft-owned game development company, The Initiative, in 2018 but had previously worked at Insomniac for a decade. He’s contributed to past releases for series like Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, and most notably Sunset Overdrive. Murray tweeted that he was leaving his position at The Initiative to better balance his work and personal life and revealed he’d taken on the role of Insomniac’s Principal Designer. — Drew Murray (@PlaidKnuckles) February 22, 2021
Sunset Overdrive: Is It Coming To PlayStation? Game industry analyst, Nibel, spotted that Sony had registered a trademark for Sunset Overdrive with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office published on April 26, 2021. This trademark registration shouldn’t be construed as outright confirmation that Sunset Overdrive will be making its way onto PS4 and PS5 console soon. Still, a new addition to Insomniac’s staff has led gamers to believe that there could be something more to this rumor.
So far, there’s been no official confirmation from either Sony or Insomniac Games that Sunset Overdrive will appear on PlayStation. Still, a remastered port of Sunset Overdrive for the PS5 and PS4 would be a simple way to revive excitement around the title and bring Insomniac’s Xbox exclusive to PlayStation consoles. The discovery of Sony’s trademark registration for Sunset Overdrive comes only a couple of months after Murray rejoined Insomniac. While it could be just a coincidence, this sequence of events has turned heads as it could suggest Sunset Overdrive is in the works for PlayStation consoles now. A full-fledged sequel seems unlikely, given that Sony and Insomniac have made the franchise low-priority, so a remastered version of the game seems more probable at this time.
