Lack of calm leads to loss of Kentucky WBB

(British athletics)

Kentucky WBB’s loss to # 25 Tennessee stung more than usual on Sunday afternoon. The ‘Cats (11-4) not only lost to a conference rival, but were embarrassed in the process.

Losing 70-53, the ‘cats were outclassed in almost every facet of the game. Whether it was looking at the stats sheet or watching the TV screen, it was obvious who wanted to win the most.

The Wildcats finished the game with just 25 rebounds compared to their average of 38 rebounds per game. Tennessee? The Lady Volunteers landed an astounding 56 boards, 20 of which came solely from Main Guard Rennia Davis.

While Tennessee did a great job getting on the boards, the Wildcats certainly didn’t slow down the bleeding with a horrific 18/63 shots from the field. In fact, a single Kentucky player has shot more than 50 percent of the field on the game, Robyn Benton. The cats essentially fed the boards of Tennessee.

Obviously, the team was outclassed by the volunteers, but they were also overwhelmed. From the moment the Wildcats stepped onto the Tennessee field, they seemed indifferent and, frankly, lethargic.

Instead of playing with the intensity of a Top 25 game, the team seemed to come out without intensity and became even more listless throughout the game. game. It was like watching a boxer get punched over and over again, while refusing to put his hands up in defense.

Without a doubt, the lack of enthusiasm hurts, but perhaps the most unexpected result of the game was Rhyne Howard’s attitude.

To say Howard was fantastic throughout the Southeastern Conference game would be an understatement. I can understand occasional hurt game. However, I can’t understand her barely running around the court with poor body language.

Howard is the team captain and is widely regarded as the best player in the country. She must understand that the girls on this team admire her for more than she does game-at-game performance. Sure, she shot 3/16 from the field, but she could have used that to inspire her teammates to step up. Instead, she lost her temper and settled for low percentage shots on several occasions.

While the team must have suffered from the loss, there is one person who hasn’t played who is probably more upset than any of the players: head coach Kyra Elzy. Former Tennessee volunteer coach Elzy was greeted by the Tennessee crowd with a standing ovation, only to come away with a loss after an impartial performance by his team.

Coach Elzy will certainly remember this game. However, it is up to her to decide whether this will be remembered as a learning experience or the start of a downward spiral. The Wildcats still have a bright future ahead of them, but bringing a sense of urgency to every competition will be as important as bringing their natural talents.
