While smoking continues to be the leading cause of preventable illness, disability, and death in the United States, the Evidence Base for Withdrawal Support has found that telephone call centers, or “hotlines,” ‘dropout’ has been a particularly successful intervention, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which recently published a compilation of scientific research in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
Entitled “The Role of Cessation Lines in Smoking Cessation,” the supplement is comprised of nine peer-reviewed articles and three commentaries presenting the latest scientific evidence on the effectiveness of smoking cessation lines. The compilation demonstrates the relevance and importance of call centers as an essential population-level tool designed to increase smoking cessation outcomes, and their role as part of a comprehensive approach to tobacco control . Additionally, it highlights changes in the commercial tobacco product landscape that will require continuous improvement and innovation in stop-line technology to continue to effectively support smokers who wish to successfully quit smoking.
