COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – An Ohio lawmaker and Republican physician who questioned whether members of the “population of color” disproportionately contract the coronavirus due to their hygiene draws further criticism after his appointment to head of the Senate State Health Committee. The controversy centers on comments made in June by Senator Stephen Huffman. The Ohio black legislative caucus on Wednesday called for a health committee leader who understands and can respond to health care inequalities in Ohio “without political influence.” A spokesperson for Huffman said he was qualified to chair the committee and had worked for a long time to provide health care to minority communities in Ohio.
