One hundred years ago today, the Lawrence Memorial Hospital officially opened its doors. While this is a milestone worthy of celebration for any organization, it is the history of the hospital’s founding that deserves special recognition.
The story told through the story is that of an elderly man who had fallen into a fit on a sidewalk near the Eldridge Hotel. There was no one around him who knew the man and Dr. Ralph E. Barnes was called in to look after him. He tried to take the man to the hospital. At the time, Lawrence was only served by small private hospitals owned by the doctors who operated them as part of their practices. One of the hospitals would have a charity bed, but when the doctor called it was busy. The others said they had nothing available.
Dr Barnes tried to find someone who might know the man and visited several homes, but no one was willing to take the man to their home, even for one night. While Dr. Barnes was driving …
