Mental health advocates hope to change the way people are helped in times of crisis

Some Colorado lawmakers and advocates want to change a system that can treat people like criminals when they are in crisis.

DENVER – With the 2021 state legislative session, some Colorado lawmakers are hoping to revisit an idea to stop a practice mental health advocates fear treating people like criminals when they are in crisis.

Vincent Atchity, of Mental Health Colorado, said the Safe Transportation Bill will update the way we give patients the help they need.

“This would set up a structure in the communities to create a alternative transport model, which will be secure, safe and health-based, so that people who need transport for treatment are carried in vehicles that do not mark them as criminals, ”said Atchity.
