When Lieutenant John Clayton of the Department of police from Pleasant Grove was new to the patrol, he was called to an emergency he will never forget.
A young child was killed in an automobile accident. Clayton had to deliver the news to the child’s parents. He and the other officers then continued their shift.
“We just buried him and moved on with our day,” Clayton said.
Today, more than two decades later, that experience still haunts Clayton as he remembers the details.
According to Clayton, things have improved since that day many years ago.
“Fortunately, we are better now at debriefing and discussing these things,” he said. “Guys are more receptive to being honest about this. Back then, you were a tough man and you had a tough job to do. We see a lot of traumatic things in our careers. For us, these are years, years and years of development. “
