LANSING, Michigan – Michigan health officials have identified the first case of a new strain of COVID-19, finding an adult female in Washtenaw County with the variant.
Designated B.1.1.7., The new strain is believed to be a more contagious version of the coronavirus that has spread throughout the state and country over the past nine months.
The case comes as Michigan has started to increase vaccine eligibility, an effort to boost inoculation rates in part over fears the new strain will soon come to the United States.
State officials first informed the public of the positive test on Saturday in a press release. Health Director General Joneigh Khaldun called the arrival of the virus “worrying, but not unexpected.
