The company said on Monday it had destroyed the servers behind Trickbot, a massive network of malware that criminals were using to launch other cyber attacks, including a very powerful ransomware strain. Microsoft said it has obtained a federal court order to deactivate IP addresses associated with Trickbot’s servers and has worked with telecommunications providers around the world to eradicate the network. The action coincides with a US Cyber Command offensive to disrupt cybercriminals, at least temporarily, according to The Washington Post.Microsoft (MSFT) recognized that attackers are likely to adapt and seek to revive their operations eventually. But, Microsoft said, the company’s efforts reflect a “new legal approach” that could help authorities fight the network in the future.
Trickbot allowed hackers to sell what Microsoft said was a service to other hackers, giving them the ability to inject other malware into vulnerable computers, routers and other devices.
