Smith, the only member of the Nebraska delegation to vote last week to challenge the results of the Shifting States Electoral College that supported Biden, called last week’s violence on Capitol Hill “horrific.” He said he supported the prosecution of “every participant and organizer of the insurgency.” His statement did not name Trump, but criticized Democrats for carrying out an “instant arraignment” without a full investigation.
“This is not the right way to fight violence and it will not bring our country back,” he said in a statement Wednesday.
Jane Kleeb, president of the Nebraska Democratic Party, said the votes were typical.
“Bacon, Fortenberry, and Smith are weak politicians who can’t even stand up to Trump when he incites a radical crowd,” she said.
