LOS ANGELES – An advanced surgical procedure studied by vascular neurosurgeons at Cedars-Sinai dramatically reduced the rate of recurrent strokes in patients with atherosclerotic disease, according to a new study.
Atherosclerotic disease, also known as hardening of the arteries, is a build-up of plaque that narrows the arteries leading to the brain. The condition is known to increase the risk of patients having a series of strokes.
Exciting new results from a Phase II clinical trial at Cedars-Sinai demonstrated that a new procedure reduced recurrent stroke rates from 37% to 10.7%. Encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis, or EDAS for short, is a new procedure that was used and recently published in the journal Neurosurgery.
