Nintendo has built a solid reputation as an intellectual property protectionist, going much further than most other game companies to exercise strict control over all of its intellectual property. While this control is deployed very broadly, one of the most visible, common, and consequential avenues of this protectionism comes in the form of Nintendo removing all kinds of fan-made creations. These games, almost universally created by huge Nintendo fans as labors of love, are almost always the subject of DMCA teardowns. Think for a moment what that means: Nintendo routinely refuses the expression of fandom by its own customers.
