MYRTLE BEACH, SC (AP) – A policeman picking up debris on a highway in South Carolina has died after being stranded by an SUV, becoming the third state law enforcement officer to be killed in a traffic incident in the past two weeks. , the authorities said.
Horry County Police Officer Melton “Fox” Gore pulled up on State Highway 21 near State Highway 31 north of Myrtle Beach around 4 p.m. Tuesday, County Police Chief said by Horry, Joseph Hill.
“Most people were able to pass this debris, bypass it, but not Fox. He wanted to make sure no one was hurt, ”Hill said.
Gore, 57, had been a Horry County officer for 20 years. He worked as an environmental officer, dealing with bedding and animal welfare issues, Hill said.
A special team of state soldiers is investigating the wreckage. No charges have been laid.
Two other South Carolina officers have died in the past two weeks.
North Myrtle Beach Public Safety Sgt. Gordon William Best, 30, died on January 1 when his cruiser crashed into a utility pole while answering a call. And Marion County MP Jonathan Price, 29, died Jan.6 when his car collided with another vehicle. The other driver also died.
