Science Talk – International Women’s Day 2021: What Mentorship Looks Like?

What do you imagine when you think of science mentoring? For many people, he is a leading, seasoned scientist who sees himself as a young researcher and takes him under his wing as a protégé. While this can happen, it is not always the case or ideal as it tends to exclude women and ethnic minorities. Mentoring comes in all kinds of shapes and sizes – a person can have many mentors throughout their career, they can be formal or informal, and opportunities can arise in unexpected ways. Mentorship can have a huge impact on the career, life and research of scientists. Despite the widespread benefits of mentoring, not everyone has access to a mentor, and the path to finding one, developing that relationship, and becoming a good mentor isn’t always straightforward.

Break down barriers

To help remove barriers to mentoring, IC has implemented several formal mentoring programs aimed at supporting different groups of staff.
