Security concerns amplify business struggles in Washington

Groundbreaking week is typically a time when businesses in the Washington area can look forward to a boost. But like other parts of the country this year, the pandemic has taken its toll on the local economy.

And now, with the nation’s capital under tight security following the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol, things are even more on lockdown. Airbnb has announced that it will cancel and block all bookings in the Washington metro area during groundbreaking week. The general business situation is grim at the moment.

Tiki TNT is a rum bar and distillery about three-quarters of a mile from the White House. Preparing owner Todd Thrasher for the grand opening?

“Lock the doors, see you later, I’m heading out of town,” Thrasher said.

He said normally they throw an opening party and his bar is busy all week. This year, he says, it’s just not worth it.
