TEWKSBURY – Like many young adults, Shannon Sullivan, originally from Tewksbury, was unsure of the career path she wanted to take when she enrolled at the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 2009.
But after her grandfather Sean Sullivan, a former Lowell police officer, died of cancer after a life spent smoking, she was inspired to pursue public health in order to help prevent loved ones from others to know similar destinies.
On Monday, Sullivan reached a turning point in her pursuit of that goal, when she took charge of the city’s public health department following the retirement of former director Shannon Sawyer, who spent four years in this role.
While she always aims to promote an overall healthy lifestyle in the community, Sullivan said helping Tewksbury residents overcome the coronavirus pandemic and facilitating vaccine distribution were her top priorities before accessing this post.
