Smaller, Faster, Greener |  EurekAlert!  Science News

When you think of your carbon footprint, what comes to mind? Drive and fly, probably. Maybe home energy use or Amazon’s daily deliveries. But what about watching Netflix or having Zoom meetings? Have you ever thought about the carbon footprint of silicon chips inside your phone, smartwatch, or countless other devices in your home?

All aspects of modern computing, from the smallest chip to the largest data the center comes with a carbon price tag. For nearly a century, the tech industry and the computation field as a whole have focused on building smaller, faster, more powerful devices – but few have considered their overall environmental impact.

Researchers at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) are trying to change that.

“Over the next decade the demand, number and types of devices will only increase,” said Udit Gupta, a PhD student in computer science at SEAS. “We want to know what impact this will have on the environment and how we, as a field, should think about how we adopt more sustainable practices. “
