Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital Caregivers Received DAISY and BEE Awards

Must Read

Surgical nurse Dawn Morningstar, RN, was given the DAISY Award after being nominated by a patient. “She talked to myself and my mom about my addiction problems,” the nomination read. “I was honest with her and my doctor and had to postpone my knee surgery. She never once judged me. She made me feel like a human being. She was so compassionate and sweet. She made me glad I was honest. I’m going to go to rehab because of her. I’m going to get clean so I can get my knee surgery. If all the nurses were as great as her, the world would be a better place.”

Mammographer Meghan Thompson was given the BEE Award. Thompson was also nominated by a patient. The DAISY award program was adopted from The DAISY Award, an international program established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. The Barnes family was deeply appreciative of the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, so they created an award to say thank you to nurses everywhere.

Meghan Thompson Big Rapids and Reed City Hospitals have expanded the recognition program to include the BEE award, open to all clinical and non-clinical employees, in addition to nurses.

Morningstar and Thompson received flowers, commemorative pins and plaques during the ceremonies. “Today was my very first mammogram,” the nomination read. “At 30 years old it’s quite frightening. This technologist came to check on us women, brought warm blankets, and smoothed over the wait. Next, I was just so scared to do the mammogram. I was ready to walk out! Her kind words and encouragement got me back into the room. Still scared, she encouraged me, walked me through the steps and process, and made the procedure not hurt. Without her specifically and the way she cared for me, I would not have gone through with the mammogram. I would have left. Thank you for everything. You put me and my health first, possibly saving my life today. I had already cancelled this appointment before so again thank you for being there for me. I really appreciate you helping me be healthy and happy.”

Nomination forms can be found at any Spectrum Health facility or submitted online at: https://www.onlineregistrationcenter.com/brrcdaisybee. Nominations are open for any Spectrum Health employee who regularly goes above and beyond in creating a meaningful experience for patients. The awards are given based on nominations from patients, community members and colleagues.
