Just days after the Arizona Interscholastic Association’s board of directors voted to cancel the winter sports season due to increased COVID-19 and hospital measures, a new vote in favor to allow the season to start as planned took place Tuesday at a special meeting.
The 5-4 re-vote in favor of winter sports from Jan. 18 followed a vote from the same tally last Friday which, at the time, canceled the season. Jim Love, who represents the Flowing Wells Unified Arizona School Boards Association and was against the season that unfolded last week, reversed course on Tuesday and voted in favor of starting the season.
Love said his decision to change his vote was in large part due to his desire to give schools the choice to have sports on campus.
