CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland (AP) – Italian skier Sofia Goggia won her third straight downhill race in the Women’s World Cup on Friday.
Goggia, who finished second in the season opener, finished 0.20 seconds behind Ester Ledecka on a shortened course. American rival Breezy Johnson extended her third-place streak on every downhill this season.
Johnson, who turned 25 this week, laughed and raised three fingers after seeing she was in third place for the fourth time, 0.57 behind the winner. The Wyoming native moved up to second in the downhill standings behind Goggia.
Overall leader Petra Vlhova nabbed an impressive fourth place to extend her lead over Michelle Gisin, who was out of the points in 33rd place.
Slalom specialist Vlhova finished 0.89 behind Goggia on her 17th consecutive start in all races this season.
“Sometimes it’s too much and I’m tired but we’re always in this gameSaid Vlhova. “We will try to continue like this.”
General Mikaela Shiffrin’s three-time champion skips the three sprint races in Crans-Montana to focus on her favorite slalom and giant slalom events.
Friday’s descent was delayed by more than three hours to clear snow during the night of the course. The race was shortened to a lower start on the Mont Lachaux course due to strong winds higher up.
A second descent is scheduled for Saturday with a super-G on Sunday.
