Minnesota High School Winter Sports Competition Returns

As the Minnesota State High School Leagues prepare to begin winter competition on Thursday, an inopportune winter storm system is creating concerns over whether or not most of Thursday’s scheduled games will take place.

Winter sports finally get the ‘green light’ on Thursday ending a hiatus on activities that began in mid-November as the state battles rising COVID-19 cases and shortages intensive care.

In December, the MSHSL finalized its plans for a winter sports season with COVID-19 regulations that include mandatory face masks for student-athletes participating in training or games, except wrestling. , swimming and diving, gymnastics and cheerleading.

John Oxton is the boys’ longtime basketball coach at Lakeville North and told WCCO Radio’s Steve Thomson that he views face masks more as a nuisance than a health risk for student-athletes.
