SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) – Scholastic athletes are expected to know soon if Gov. Phil Murphy is considering expanding his ban on indoor sports across Garden State.
The governor imposed the restriction on December 7 in an effort to slow the second wave of coronavirus infections. The ban bans indoor games and practices for recreational leagues for youth, high schools and adults, including basketball and ice hockey.
University and professional sports are exempt.
The order will expire on Saturday. Murphy said he was concerned about the safety of intra-state competitions, but that he plans to address the future of the ban in the coming days.
“By definition you have traveling groups, people coming together, etc. But we know we need an answer on this, ”he said.
Murphy does not intend to lift further COVID-19 restrictions at this time.
