GENEVA (AP) – Russia is giving up its place on the FIFA Council and proposing its football president as a new candidate to join the UEFA executive committee, the European football body announced on Thursday.
The FIFA seat is vacated by Alexey Sorokin, who joined the board four years ago when he was CEO of the Russian organizing committee for the 2018 World Cup. Since the tournament he has joined the board board of the Russian State Economic Development Corporation, VEB.
Sorokin had taken over the FIFA seat left open when a selection committee barred then Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko from retaining his seat due to a conflict of interest.
Sorokin and another of the eight European delegates to FIFA’s 37-member council, Fernando Gomes of Portugal, are not standing for re-election by UEFA’s member federations on April 20.
