There was a time, before the recent explosion of alternative jerseys that apparently marked all occasions (Latin Heritage Month, Chinese New Year, St. Patrick’s Day, Fourth of July, Military Appreciation, Retro, City Edition, etc. ), where the sports uniforms were quite simple. Local teams wore white and visitors wore colors. End of the story.
Of course, anyone who has seen an Oregon duck game in recent years knows that this is no longer the case. There is certainly a financial element involved – each successive jersey provides more merchandising opportunities – but whatever the reason for the recent influx of non-traditional uniforms, the spell seems to be cast. Like it or not, the replacements are here to stay.
As teams continue to push the boundaries, desperately trying to outdo each other in a league-wide arms race for the wackiest uniforms, Friday night’s debacle …
