Butler played with just eight stock Sunday against No.8 Villanova, but the Bulldogs had enough to knock down the Wildcats 73-61, who struggled mightily beyond the arc. Villanova entered as the Big East leader in 3 points by game and a 3-point percentage during league play, but only managed 2 of 27 shots against a Butler team who have now scored back-to-back losses.
The Bulldogs (9-13, 8-11 Big East) have suffered injuries and absences this season, and they continue to do so this week. But coach LaVall Jordan’s side appear to be finding their rhythm after also beating Seton Hall on Wednesday. Butler will have a chance to keep the momentum going with another signature win as the regular season wraps up at the 13th Creighton next Saturday.
As for Villanova (15-4, 10-3), the defeat will move him from a seeded No. 2 projected to a seeded No. 3 projected in the bracketology of Jerry Palm. The Wildcats are expected to host Creighton on Wednesday before playing Providence next Saturday to close out the regular season.
While a horrendous 7% 3-point shooting clip stands out on the box score as the culprit of Villanova’s struggles on Sunday, the Wildcats also struggled defensively as an offensive challenged.
