Collectively, Indians have a responsibility to advance the country’s rich and varied scientific heritage.
National Science Day, which fell on February 28, commemorates a groundbreaking discovery at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in Calcutta in 1928 known as the Raman Effect. Three more The physicists of Calcutta, namely Jagadish Chandra Bose who was the senior of CV Raman, Satyendra Nath Bose and Meghnad Saha, both juniors of Raman, had then made major contributions which were acclaimed worldwide.
But Raman’s discovery marked the climax for which he would win the Nobel Prize in Physics two years later, making him the most visible face of Indian science.
Pursuing Scientific Truth
It seems very thoughtful and rational that our National Science Day celebrates a discovery and not the birthday of its discoverer. Raman, as a person, was not beyond criticism.
