At Riley Children’s Hospital, emergency room visits have increased related to mental health and suicide. From March to December, these visits increased by 61% compared to the same months in 2019.
Hilary Blake, a psychologist at Indianapolis Hospital, says there is a mental health crisis in Indiana.
“I think COVID shed some light on this, but I think the mental health crisis has been here unfortunately for some time in the state of Indiana,” she says. “We don’t have enough providers, especially psychiatrists, to help children with mental health needs.”
Blake says the closure of schools due to the pandemic has affected the mental health of students.
