The proposal would prohibit someone who is behind on personal property taxes or who is the subject of a property tax judgment from bidding on or participating in a tax sale.
The prohibition would also apply to business entities, such as a limited liability company, either directly created by the individual, or where the individual is related to the entity – or as a member, employee, shareholder, agent, partner or lawyer.
Under the proposed bill, fraudulent bidders who knowingly provide false information during the tax sale process would be liable to a felony charge punishable by one year in prison and a fine of $ 5,000.
Over the years, the Lake County Auditors’ Tax Sales Department has worked diligently to prevent people from taking advantage of the system.
If approved, this statute will incorporate some of the local tax sale rules suggested by the Auditor and which the Lake County Council instituted by local ordinance here.
