ATLANTA – Sixth-ranked Duke women’s tennis team dropped to 12th in Georgia Tech, 4-3, in a marathon match to end the ITA 2021 launch weekend Sunday afternoon in Atlanta.

With the loss, the Blue Devils drop to 2-1 while the Yellow Jackets improve to 3-0. The loss ends a 12-year streak for Duke to advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.

For the third time this season, the Blue Devils have won the double point. The duo Kelly Chen and Georgia Drummy took a 6-1 victory over Ruth Marsh and Ava Hrastar on court three before Chloe Beck and Karolina Berankova claimed a 6-2 victory over Gia Cohen and Carol Lee on court two. With the wins, Chen and Drummy improve to 4-2 in doubles as Beck and Berankova rise to a better score of 6-1.

Georgia Tech tied the score (1-1) with a win on court four. No.123 Cohen beat No.29 Beck (6-3, 6-3), giving Beck his second loss this season.

Rookie Berankova helped Duke regain the lead with a victory over short six. Ranked No.95 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), Berankova beat Marsh 6-3, 6-2 for her third victory this spring.

Junior Margaryta Bilokin extended Duke’s lead (3-1) to claim her fifth victory of the season. Tabbed No.44, Bilokin outlived Lee in a second set tiebreak (6-2, 7-6 [5]) to claim victory.

Minutes later, the Yellow Jackets responded with a court victory. No 13 Kenya Jones rebounded from a first set loss to defeat No 8 Chen (4-6, 6-0, 6-4) in the three-set marathon. Georgia Tech tied the game (3-3) as 56th Victoria Flores beat 111st Meible Chi (4-6, 6-3, 6-4) on third court.

It all took place in court two between number 28 Drummy and Hrastar. Drummy was unable to hold back Hrastar in a three-set match that included two tiebreakers. Drummy won the first set (6-2) but could not finish in the second (6-7 [5]) and third series (6-7 [3]).

Duke will host Furman on Sunday, January 31.
