In this news, we discuss the Anthem to pay nearly $40 million to settle data breach probe by U.S. states.
(Reuters) – Anthem Inc said on Wednesday it would pay $ 39.5 million in a settlement with U.S. state attorneys general following an investigation into a massive cyber attack on the company in 2015.
America’s second-largest health insurer said a state-sponsored criminal group carried out the attack, adding that it did not believe the company had violated the law in relation to the security of its data.
Anthem said it has also made commitments that align with its ongoing goal of protecting information.
In February 2015, several US states launched an investigation after the company revealed that unknown hackers broke into a database containing some 80 million records.
Anthem had said it suspected hackers had stolen information belonging to tens of millions of current and former customers as well as employees.
The investigation by the FBI and security organization FireEye Inc found no evidence that information obtained through the cyber attack resulted in fraud, the company said on Wednesday.
